Foreign trade and Industrial import prices - January 2022

Please note that value import data of natural gas in gaseous state for months July to December 2021 are under revision (see the Press Note of March 15). It is not possible to disseminate data on imports from world and non-EU area, nor related unit value and volume indices. Revised data will be released on March 25. All revised series will be made available on Coeweb (https://www.coeweb.istat.it/) by the end of March.

As a consequence of technical difficulties in transmitting new Intrastat models, there was a partial reduction in the flow of Intrastat declarations. January 2022 intra-EU trade data, collected by Intrastat system, were integrated using additional sources (see Methodological note, page 10).

In January 2022 seasonally-adjusted data, compared to December 2021, increased by +5.3% for outgoing flows. Exports raised by +5.1% for EU countries and by +5.4% for non EU countries. Over the last three months, compared to the previous three months, exports increased by +4.7%.

Imports from the EU area decreased by 4.3% compared to December 2021 while increased by 9.1% over the last three months, with respect to the previous three months.

In January 2022, compared with the same month of the previous year, both exports and imports grew (+22.6% and +44.5% respectively). Outgoing flows increased by +25.5% for EU countries and by +19.2% for non EU countries. Incoming flows rose by +29.0% for EU area and by +65.5% for non EU area.

In January 2022, the trade balance registered a deficit of -5,052 million Euros (-890 million Euros for EU countries and -4,162 million Euros for non EU countries); excluding energy, the trade balance amounted to 1,387 million Euros compared with a 3,911 million Euros surplus in January 2021.

In January 2022, import prices increased by 3.0% on monthly basis (+1.3% for the euro zone, +4.8% for the non-euro zone). Over the last three months, compared to the previous three months, import prices increased by 4.7% (+2.3% for the euro zone, +7.1% for the non-euro zone).

Import prices, compared to the same month a year ago, increased by 17,9% in January 2022 (+10.2% for the euro zone and +25.6% for the non-euro zone).

Since January 2022 import price indices are compiled in the calculation base December 2021 and disseminated in reference base 2015.
