Istat 2026 Poster Competition: winners and top-ranked by class
There was great participation for the Istat 2026 Poster Competition, launched upon the occasion of Istat’s Centenary, in the two categories stated by the regulation: upper secondary schools and universities (bachelor’s degrees); the Competition is intended as a continuation of the International Statistical Poster Competition ISLP (biennial), in which Italy has been participating since 2010.
76 posters were received, 61 of which were from upper secondary schools alone.
Let’s discover together the works that won in the two categories and those that ranked in the top positions by class.
The winner of the Competition, for all upper secondary school classes, is the poster “Il diritto di partire, il dovere di accogliere: immigrazione ed emigrazione in Emilia-Romagna” (The right to leave, the duty to welcome: immigration and emigration in Emilia-Romagna), created by the team of students Alessandro Culzoni, Weam El Khabch, Imen Louati, Marco Pezone and Yaru Yu, referent teachers Angela Macioce and Chiara Bachechi, from class III of the Jacopo Barozzi Institute in Modena.
The poster is awarded for its complete and balanced structure in its components. Among the graphic representations, the cartograms showing regional migration balances stand out, comparing present-day Italy with the country as it was 100 years ago. The work addresses a highly debated topic, immigration and emigration, and the regional focus is presented in comparison with the national average.
For the first classes of upper secondary schools, first place goes to the poster “Gli ultimi 100 anni del Trentino: gli effetti del cambiamento climatico su flora e fauna” (The last 100 years in Trentino: the effects of climate change on flora and fauna) , created by the team of students Gianluca Carlini, Filippo Battisti, Gabriel Parisi, Paolo Fedrizzi, and Alessandro Savin, referent teachers Francesca Mazzini and Daniela Gruber, from class I of the ITT Buonarroti in Trento.
The poster shows an excellent balance between scientific rigour and communication ability. The theme is original and analysed in detail. The section dedicated to flora was judged very clear, and the structure of the tables allows for immediate comprehension of the data. The graphic design and colour palette are effective, making the reading experience extremely fluid.
For Class I, in second place, the poster “Trentino: in che modo è diventato una meta turistica alpina di successo nel mondo?” (Trentino: how did it become a globally renowned Alpine tourist destination?), created by the team of students Fedra Antignano, Martin Dalprà, Matteo Manara, and Marco Rizzi, referent teachers Francesca Mazzini and Daniela Gruber, from class I of the ITT Buonarroti in Trento.
The work presents a recent snapshot of the origins of tourist flows in Trentino. Its methodological rigour is commendable, as demonstrated by its use of official and authoritative sources. The graphic design is simple and functional.
For Class I, the poster “Gli ultimi 100 anni di storia del Trentino – SLOI: quale impatto sul territorio?” (The last 100 years of Trentino’s history – SLOI: what impact has it had on the region?), created by the team of students Roberto Basta, Sebastian Delfino, Alessandro Mattiello, Thomas Prantil, and Pietro Tomasi, referent teachers Francesca Mazzini and Daniela Gruber, from class I of the ITT Buonarroti in Trento, ranks third.
The poster stands out for its solid sectoral statistical analysis, capable of translating technical data into a clear and objective narrative. The proposed theme, as an emblematic example of industrial archaeology and environmental criticality, was considered to be of strong civic value. The graphic design is simple and effective.
For the second classes of upper secondary schools, in first place the work “Puglia: il secolo della metamorfosi” (Puglia: a century of transformation ), created by the team of students Riccardo Berardelli and Manuel Bruno, referent teacher Luigina Altamura, from class II of the IISS E. Fermi in Lecce.
The poster stands out for its excellent statistical framework and thorough methodological work, capable of consistently integrating the various analysed variables. The critical ability demonstrated in the conclusions is particularly commendable, as it is not limited to data synthesis but outlines concrete and proactive proposals for the future.
For Class II, the poster “Da terra di fame a paradiso del lusso: come ha fatto il Trentino a trasformare la miseria in un impero?” (From a land of famine to a heaven of luxury: how did Trentino manage to turn poverty into an empire?), created by the team of students Elisa Briamonte, Adelaide De Toni, Silvia Fravezzi, and Saira Osmic, referent teacher Cristina Mosna, from class II of the ITT Buonarroti in Trento, comes in the second place.
The poster demonstrates maturity in addressing the socioeconomic evolution of the territory over the last hundred years. The solid and complete analysis is commendable. The work stands out for its effective and functional graphic design, capable of conveying a clear and immediate message. The excellent balance between textual and visual elements and the accuracy of the graphs, based on official sources, is appreciated.
For Class II, the poster “Un secolo di famiglia – L’evoluzione della casa italiana” (A century of family life – The evolution of the Italian home), created by the team of students Sveva Gennelli, Giacomo Lenzi, Louis Kaile Liu, Payas Solanki and Pietro Vicini, referent teacher Matteo Giorgini, from class II of the Primo Levi Institute in Vignola (MO), ranks third.
The poster stands out for an excellent time series analysis and a solid ability to interpret data over time. The work addresses the proposed theme comprehensively from both an economic and social perspective, with a rigorous use of official sources, which ensures high documentary value for the entire research. The design is pleasing.
For the third classes of upper secondary schools, in the second position after the overall winning poster of the Competition “Di filo in filo” (Thread by thread), created by the team of students Elena Cappuccio, Erika Hu, Noemi Lampitelli, Virginia Petti and Simona Vullo, referent teachers Angela Macioce and Chiara Bachechi, from the class III of the Jacopo Barozzi Institute in Modena.
The poster presents an original interpretation of a theme strictly characterising the territory: quality manufacturing. The in-depth study carried out unfolds through the integration of different sources, highlighting the time series analysis, mainly focused on the last twenty years.
For Class III, the poster “Modena guida l’automotive” (Modena leads the automotive sector), created by the team of students Daniel Adzhygyrei, Daniele Barone, Alex Fontanesi, Christian Savino and Lu Jia Wang, referent teachers Angela Macioce and Chiara Bachechi, from the class III of the Jacopo Barozzi Institute in Modena, ranks third.
The poster answers the research question through the perspective proposed by the students on the automotive sector, a reality that distinguishes Italy worldwide. The analysis is conducted over time, starting from the 1940s, and, based on data availability, it develops through both descriptive and multivariate analyses. The correct use of data and the coherence of the narrative are appreciated.
For the fourth classes of upper secondary schools, the poster “Un secolo di metamorfosi nel panorama lavorativo di Mantova” (A century of transformation in the employment landscape of Mantova), created by the team of students Asmae El Aoual, Filippo Faccin, Benedetta Ingarao, Carlotta Rossi and Giulia Strozzi, referent teacher Sara Borgonovi, from the class IV of ITES Alberto Pitentino in Mantova, comes first.
The poster was well considered for the excellent contextualisation of the data in relation to the historical evolution of the phenomenon; it is coherent and very pleasant to read, with a well-balanced organisation of space. The graphs are well-commented and accompanied by data sources.
For Class IV, the poster “Cento anni di storia del territorio – La partecipazione elettorale in Italia” (A century of local history – Voter turnout in Italy), created by the team of students Giacomo Introna and Celeste Zignani, referent teacher Alessandra Capon, from the class IV of Liceo Ginnasio Torquato Tasso in Rome, comes second.
The poster is clear in its presentation; the topic presented is current, interesting, and includes an accurate historical analysis to support the data.
For Class IV, the poster “Come si trasforma la povertà – Torino 1926–2026” (How poverty is changing – Turin 1926–2026 ), created by the team of students Martina Luly, Alessandro Perrone and Maria Rubiolo, referent teacher Emanuela Musso, from the class IV of Convitto Umberto I in Turin, comes third.
The poster is pleasant and easy to read, with an accurate historical description of the evolution of poverty; the topic is current, and the hundred years of statistical analysis indicated in the Competition theme have been respected. The poster also includes historical data, collected in a detailed manner.
For Class V, the award goes to the poster titled “100 anni di storia della tua regione: storia dell’evoluzione dell’economia pugliese dal 1926 al 2026” (100 years of your region’s history: the evolution of the economy in Puglia from 1926 to 2026), a poster created by the team of students Federico Brunetti and Michele Pio Lomartire, referent teacher Roberto Spagnolo, from the class V of Liceo De Sanctis Galilei in Manduria (TA).
The poster presents a good collection of statistical data on the topic discussed, the comments are clear, and the presentation is generally pleasing and well-structured; it analyses the various phases of the development of the economy of Puglia over the last 100 years.
First place is awarded to the poster titled “Sanità in Italia: eccellenza o codice rosso?” (Healthcare in Italy: excellence or a state of emergency?), created by the team of students Cecilia Altomare, Adriano Antonini, Luca Befera, and Maria Vittoria Feroci, referent professors Stefania Gubbiotti and Valeria Sambucini; the students are enrolled in the third year of the Degree Course in Management Statistics, in the Department of Statistical Sciences – Sapienza Università di Roma.
The awarded poster deals with a current and very interesting topic. It presents a clear and well-structured exposition, and the data were contextualised based on important historical events for the healthcare sector. The presentation and graphic design are well-executed and appealing.
In second place, we find the work “Il futuro è nell’aria” (The future is in the air), by the team of students Sara Camerota, Aurora Crapa, Michele Marino, and Gioele Miccoli, referent professors Francesca Silvia Rota and Elena Siletti; the students are enrolled in the second year of the Degree Course in Economics and Statistics for Organisations, within the Department of Economics and Statistics ‘Cognetti de Martiis’ at the University of Turin.
The poster is pleasant to read and has a clear and communicative structure. It also presents a current and interesting topic and features comprehensive data collection and good use of graphics.
In third place, the work “La Mole del sapere” (The vastness of knowledge), by the team of students Elisa Broglio, Riccardo Cotugno, Clarissa Paola Fuda, Lorenzo Giacosa, and Nicolò Grosso, referent professors Alain Marciano and Natalia Golini; the students are enrolled in the third year of the Degree Course in Economics and Statistics for Organisations, within the Department of Economics and Statistics ‘Cognetti de Martiis’ at the University of Turin.
The poster gains a special mention because it is graphically very pleasing, presents a good communicative structure, and the graphics are well-structured, well-made, and based on data that analyse the reference territory.
