This system of regional indicators provides a general overview for monitoring and evaluating health in Italy: the functioning of the sanitary system and the health status of the population.

The dat-set is divided into three parts. The first one is dedicated to the health status of the population, the lifestyles and the health risk factors; the second part deals with the resources of the National Health Service (economic and instrumental) and their use by citizens. The third part focuses on indicators on demographic, social, economic and environmental context.

In particular have been included indicators on:

  • health status of the population, acute illnesses, invalidity, and physical and mental component summary measures (Istat multi-purpose survey on “Health status of the population and use of health services”)
  • life expectancy, healthy life expectancy and disability-free life expectancy at regional level
  • prevention, childhood vaccinations and vaccinations against influenza for elderly people (Istat multi-purpose survey on “Health status of the population and use of health services”)
  • health expenditure, households’ private health expenditures (Istat “Household budget survey” – National Account Directorate. Percentage of health expenditure was calculated out of the regional gross domestic product)
  • health care resources, some types of medical equipments (ultrasound tomography, computerised axial tomography, nuclear magnetic resonance) available in out-patient facilities

The regional data-set on health is part of the database “Health for All-Italia”.
