Labour Force Survey - 3 months longitudinal data

The ‘Labour Force Survey’ longitudinal micro-data files – longitudinal data 3 months apart’ – are produced from the quarterly data by linking the information collected on the same individuals on two different survey occasions (3 months apart). The estimates produced refer to the population that maintains residence in the same municipality throughout the period considered. This population was calculated as the resident population at the beginning of the period (excluding individuals in cohabiting households), net of deaths and changes of residence to other municipalities and/or abroad.

The cross-referencing of the variables in the files (occupational status, type of work activity, work experience, job search, etc.) makes it possible to estimate inflows, outflows and permanence in the various conditions, with a breakdown, in particular, by gender, age and territory.

The longitudinal files 3 months apart concern two different periods that are not comparable with each other: from first quarter 2012 – second quarter 2012 (Q12012-Q22012) to third quarter 2020 – fourth quarter 2020 (Q32020-Q42020); from first quarter 2021 – second quarter 2021 (Q12021-Q22021).

Starting from Q12021-Q22021, longitudinal data:

  • are produced for each quarter of each year;
  • broaden the possibilities of analysis thanks to the release of a larger number of variables, including on hosehold characteristics;
  • consider the changes in the definitions of family and employment, therefore they are not comparable with those produced previously.

From Q12012-Q22012  to Q32020-Q42020 longitudinal data:

  • were produced for each quarter of each year;
  • they consider the population reconstructed on the basis of the Census results and the revision of the registers by the Municipalities in the post-census period, therefore they are not comparable with those produced previously.
