Integration of the second generation: public use micro.stat files
In 2015 Istat carried out the survey on “Integration of the second generation”, the project was co-financed by the Ministry of Interior and the EU European Fund for the Integration of third-country nationals (EFI). The survey is based on a sample of secondary schools with at least 5 foreign pupils. Schools were extracted on the basis of the data provided by the MIUR students’ registry on the basis of the provisional data referring to December 2014 (for Aosta, the reference data was that of the academic year 2012/2013). Since the main objective was the study of the integration of migrant background people, for a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon it was necessary to involve also a control group of students with Italian citizenship. The survey investigated many different dimensions of second generation social inclusion: migration history (if migrant), knowledge and use of Italian language (for foreigners), school, relationship, household conditions.
The students has been invited to self-fill in the electronic questionnaire at school, during the lesson time, in a computer lab, assisted by a municipal expert. There were 821 municipalities involved in the survey: over 1,400 schools throughout the country responded to the survey, for a total of 68,127 young people interviewed, of whom 36,440 italian and 31,687 foreign.
