The next General Census of Agriculture will begin in 2020 and will fall every ten years. All farms in Italy will be called on to participate. The main goal of the census of agriculture is to provide a picture of statistical information on the structure of the agricultural and livestock farming system at national, regional and local levels.

As established by the Regulations of the European Parliament and of the European Council on Integrated Farm Statistics (IFS) on agriculture farms, the general census provides comparable data between Member States, information necessary for the monitoring of agricultural policies and rural development of the European Community.

Subsequently the census of agriculture will become permanent and will integrate available administrative data with specific measurements that involve only the farms selected on the basis of representative samples. The use of administrative sources helps reduce costs and response burdens, while at the same time allowing for an increase of the quality and consistency of the data produced.
