Public and Private Libraries Census

The Census, addressed to more than 9,000 libraries, state and non-state, both public and private, is carried out by Istat in the framework of the “Memorandum of understanding for the development of an integrated information system on cultural institutes and places”, co-signed with the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism (Mibact), the Regions and Autonomous Provinces, and in close collaboration with the ICCU – Central Institute for the Union Catalogue of Italian Libraries and Bibliographic Information – and the CEI – Italian Episcopal Conference.

The agreement between Italian National Institute of Statistics (Istat) and the Cohesion Policy Department (DPCoe) Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the Territorial Cohesion Agency (ACT), has allowed the realization of a specific annual short survey, that makes it possible to achieve a systematical update of the libraries’ descriptive and identification data.

The micro data information show a detailed picture of the structural and functional characteristics of the libraries – the ones that were open to the public in a specific year – highlighting the forms of management, the type and the amount of books heritage owned, the offered activities and services and the level of catchment.
