The year 2021 opens with important news for the Labour Force Survey, which has provided official estimates of employed and unemployed and other key information on labour market trends since the early 1950s.

Regulation (EU) 2019/1700 of the European Parliament and of the Council, which is in force since January 1st, 2021, establishes more detailed and binding requirements for European statistics on persons and households based on individual-level data obtained from samples intending to improve harmonization.

The new Labour Force Survey implements the Regulation requirements, which also introduces changes to the definition of household and the definition of employed person using a new questionnaire.

For the first quarter of 2021, running in parallel with the new survey, an overlapping survey is conducted using the previous questionnaire, in use until 2020, to verify the functioning of the new survey and reconstruct the time series of the main indicators.

As a result of these changes, the release of data for 2021 will be modified with respect to traditional timing. In particular, the Employment and Unemployment press release, which will refer to January and February, is postponed to April 6th. Besides, the updated data on the labour market ordinarily available for download from I.stat, Istat’s corporate datawarehouse, will not be published until the reconstruction of the time series, scheduled for the end of the year. More detailed information is available in the Dissemination section.
