Foreign trade and import prices

Istat presents data on Italy’s foreign trade as well as unit value and volume indices (base year 2010=100) referring to January 2017. The results of the flash estimates on extra EU trade for January 2017 have been disseminated on February 27th .

  • In January 2017 seasonally-adjusted data, compared to December 2016, increased by 0.5% for outgoing flows and decreased by 0.2 for incoming flows. Exports increased for non EU countries (+2.8%) while decreased for EU countries (-1.3%). The decrease of imports is the result of an increase for non EU countries (+1.7%) and a drop for EU countries (-1.5%). Over the last three months, seasonally-adjusted data, in comparison with the previous three months, showed a growth of 3.8% for exports and of 4.3% for imports.
  • In January 2017, compared with the same month of the previous year, trade increased by 13.3% for exports and by 15.5% for imports. Outgoing
    flows increased by 19.7 for non EU countries and by 9.0 for EU countries. Incoming flows grew by 22.3 for non EU area and by 10.6 for EU area. The trade balance in January amounted to -0.6 billion Euros (+0.3 billion Euros for EU area and -0.9 billion Euros for non EU countries)

The import price index measures the evolution of prices for industrial products bought by industrial and commercial enterprises in Italy, both in the euro zone and the non-euro zone. Since March 2010 indices are compiled in the reference base 2010.

In January 2017 the total import price index increased by 0.2% compared to the previous month (the index increased by 0.1% for the euro zone and by 0.3% for the non-euro zone); the total twelve-month rate of change increased by 4.7% (respectively increased by 0.5% for the euro zone and by 8.2% for the non-euro zone).

The quarterly total index increased by 1.7% compared with the previous period, by 0.1% for the euro zone and by 3.1% for the non-euro zone.
