Surfing the net means being exposed to a large amount of data and information that are often
conflicting and not always immediately understandable. Learning to read a graph correctly or to
interpret a table are among the first skills needed to use the web. Developing a critical capacity to
understand how and why that data were collected and disseminated, what is the source and how
to find and compare similar data are essential tools to extricate oneself in the continuous flow of
information. Starting from the Indicazioni nazionali per il curriculo della scuola dell’infanzia e del
primo ciclo di istruzione, this paper proposes a working method that teaches to pupils of primary
and lower secondary school to know and use data of official statistics through the techniques of
storytelling, to understand the social, economic and cultural situation of our country.
