Use and abuse of alcohol

In 2011 the percentage of the population aged 11 and over who had consumed at least one alcoholic drink during the year was 65%; this rate is stable compared to the previous year. 25.8% of the population (13,954,000 people) drank alcoholic beverages daily, while 41.9% consumed alcohol at least once outside meals, this percentage is significantly higher than in 2010 (38,4%).

53.3% of people aged 11 and over drink wine, 46.2% drink beer, and 40.6% drink alcoholic aperitifs, digestive liqueurs, spirits or liqueurs. 23.6% drink wine every day, while 4.5% of the reference population drink beer.

During the last 10 years there has been an increase in the number of occasional consumers and those who drink outside meals, while the number of who consume alcoholic beverages other than wine and beer is stable and the number of daily consumers and those who only drink wine and beer has fallen.
