Employment and unemployment (provisional estimates) - September 2024

In September 2024 the number of both employed and unemployed people decreased, while inactive persons rose.

On a monthly basis, the fall in employment (-0.3%, -63 thousand) affected both genders and people in the 15-24 and 35-49 age groups, while an increase in employment was observed for people aged 25-34, and those aged 50+ remained substantially stable. Overall, the employment rate dropped to 62.1% (-0.1 p.p.).

In the last month, the decline in the number of unemployed persons (-0.9%, -14 thousand) involved males and those aged 35 and over, while unemployment rose among women and those under 35. The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 6.1%, the youth rate climbed to 18.3% (+0.3 p.p.).

In September, the number of inactive people aged 15 to 64 increased (+0.4%, +56 thousand) for men, women and for all age groups except those aged 25-34, for whom a decline was observed. The inactivity rate rose to 33.7% (+0.2 p.p.).

Comparing the third quarter with the second quarter of 2024, employment increased (+0.4, +84 thousand).

On a quarterly basis, a drop was registered in the number of unemployed persons (-8.5%, -147 thousand) while the number of inactive people aged 15-64 years grew (+1.1%, +138 thousand).

Compared with September 2023, the number of employed persons rose by 1.3% (+301 thousand) with the growth affecting both sexes and all age groups except the 35-49 age group, which remainded substancially stable; the employment rate showed an increase of 0.4 p.p. .

On a yearly basis, the rise of employed people was accompanied by a decrease of unemployed persons (-21.4%, -423 thousand) while the number of inactive persons aged 15-64 increased (+2.8%, +337 thousand).
