Employment and unemployment (provisional estimates) - April 2024
In April 2024 the number employed people rose, while unemployed persons fell and inactive ones remained stable.
On a monthly basis, the increase in employment (+0.4%, +84 thousand) affected both men and women and all age goups, with the exception of those aged 25 to 34, for whom employment fell. Overall, the employment rate rose to 62.3% (+0.1 p.p.).
In the last month, the decrease in the number of unemployed persons (-3.0%, -55 thousand) also involved both genders and all age groups, except those aged 15 to 24. The unemployment rate fell to 6.9% (-0.2 p.p.), while the youth rate remained unchanged at 20.2%.
In April, the stability of the number of inactive people aged 15 to 64 was a synthesis of the increase for men and 25-34 year olds and the decrease for women and other age groups. The inactivity rate remained unchanged at 33.0%.
In the period February-April 2024, with respect to the previous quarter (November 2023-January 2024), employment increased (+0.6, +136 thousand).
On a quarterly basis, a drop was registered in the number of unemployed persons (-2.3%, -44 thousand) and inactive persons aged 15-64 years (-0.2%, -19 thousand).
Compared with April 2023, the number of employed persons rose by 2.2% (+516 thousand) and the growth concerned both genders and all age groups; the employment rate showed an increase of 1.1 p.p.
On a yearly basis, the rise of employed people was accompanied by a fall of both unemployed people (-11.8%, -236 thousand) and inactive persons aged 15-64 (-1.3%, -166 thousand).
