Employment and unemployment (Provisional data) – June 2024
In June 2024 the number of both employed and unemployed people rose, while inactive persons fell.
On a monthly basis, the increase in employment (+0.1%, +25 thousand) affected men and people in the 25-34 and 50+ age groups, while it decreased for women and people in the 15-24 and 35-49 age groups. Overall, the employment rate grew to 62.2% (+0.1 p.p.).
In the last month, the increase in the number of unemployed persons (+1.3%, +23 thousand) involved both genders and the 35-49 age group, while a decrease was recorded for the 15-24 and 50+ age groups. The unemployment rate climbed at 7.0% (+0.1 p.p.), the youth rate climbed to 20.5% (+0.1 p.p.).
In June, the number of inactive people aged 15 to 64 declined (-0.3%, -41 thousand) for men and for the age groups 25-34 and 50+, while it increased for those aged 15-24 and 35-49. The inactivity rate fell to 33.0% (-0.1 p.p.).
In the second quarter of 2024, employment rose in relation to the previous quarter (+0.5, +124 thousand).
On a quarterly basis, a drop was registered in the number of unemployed persons (-4.0%, -74 thousand) while the number of inactive people aged 15-64 years grew (+0.1%, +18 thousand).
Compared with June 2023, the number of employed persons rose by 1.4% (+337 thousand) and the growth concerned both genders and all age groups; the employment rate showed an increase of 0.7 p.p. .
On a yearly basis, the rise of employed people was accompanied by a fall of both unemployed people (-6.4%, -122 thousand) and inactive persons aged 15-64 (-0.8%, -103 thousand).
