At the address http://demo.istat.it/index_e.html (under the section “Elaborations”) and at the address http://dati.istat.it/?lang=en (under the theme “Population and Households”), Istat releases the Life tables of the resident population for the year 2009. Data are available at NUTS-1, NUTS-2 and NUTS-3 level.

Users are allowed to perform custom queries and download data in CSV format.

Life tables are available by single-age class  or five-years age classes. The following indicators are included:

  • Probability of death (per thousand)
  • Survivors
  • Deaths
  • Number of years lived
  • Projection probability
  • Life expectancy.

At regional level (NUTS-2) the database starts from 1974. Piedmont-Valle d’Aosta regions and Abruzzo-Molise regions are drawn together up to 2008.

At provincial level (NUTS-3) the database starts from 1992. The territorial classification of the provinces varies over time. It’s based on 103 territorial units until 2005, on 107 units since 2006, the current classification including the new Sardinian provinces of  Olbia-Tempio, Ogliastra, Medio Campidano and Carbonia-Iglesias. Further information on the territorial classification can be achieved consulting the codes of Italian municipalities, provinces and regions.
