Preliminary results of the 15th Population and Housing

Istat presents the preliminary results of the 15th Population and Housing.

Italy has a total resident population of 59.464.644, (28.750.942 males and 30.713.702 females). Italy’s female population exceeds the male one by nearly 2 million individuals, accounting for 52% of total residents.

Rome is the most populous municipality with 2,612,068 residents; Pedesina, province of Sondrio, with 30 residents is the least.

In the last decade, foreign citizens residing in Italy have almost tripled, from just over 1.3 million to about 3.8 million.

Between 2001 and 2011 households residing in Italy increased by 12.4%, from 21,810,676 to 24,512,012.

The average number of members per household has gradually decreased; from 2.6 individuals in 2001 to 2.4 persons in 2011.

There are 28,863,604 residential buildings, of which 23,998,381 occupied by residents; the dwelling occupancy rate is 83.1%

The total number of buildings surveyed has exceeded 14 million units (14,176,371), an increase of 11% compared to 2001.

71,101 households live in shacks, caravans and tents; a considerable increase over 2001 (23,336).

The most densely populated municipality is Portici (province of Naples), the least Briga Alta (province of Cuneo). The largest municipality is Rome while Fiera di Primiero (province of Trento) is the smallest.
