Consumer and business confidence - January 2024

Starting from the release of data referring to January 2024, Istat disseminates Istat Economic Sentiment Indicator (IESI) and the confidence climate indices with the new base year 2021=100. Moreover, with reference to Consumer survey, all time series (balances and indexes) are released only in a raw form. For further details see the Methodological Note.

In January 2024, the consumer confidence index progressed from 95.8 to 96.4. With regard to its components, only the personal climate slightly worsened from 94.4 to 93.9, while all the other ones bettered. In more detail, the current climate grew from 95.4 to 95.8, the future one rose from 96.4 to 97.2 and, finally, the economic one moved up from 99.7 to 103.1.

With reference to the business confidence climate, the index (IESI, Istat Economic Sentiment Indicator) increased from 97.3 to 98.1.

The confidence climate in manufacturing got on from 87.3 to 88.3. Favourable signals came from assessments on order books and expectations on production (the related balances recovered from -18.0 to -16.9 and from 0.5 to 1.0, respectively) while inventories were considered to have declined slightly (the balance of the variable slipped from 5.4 to 4.0).

The confidence climate in construction improved from 106.7 to 107.0. More specifically, the assessments on order books/construction slipped from 5.8 to 5.0 and expectations on employment bettered from 7.8 to 9.3.

The market services confidence climate showed a slight improvement passing from 102.4 to 102.6. Among the series included in the definition of the index, assessments on order books declined (the balance of the variable passed from 9.5 to 8.0), while the opinions both on current business trend and future volume of order books progressed (the related balances passed from 11.4 to 12.5 and from 6.9 to 8.0, respectively).

The retail trade confidence index increased from 104.0 to 106.6. The balance referring to the future business trend clearly grew, while assessments both on inventories and current sale volume went down (the balance of the first variable passed from 20.1 to 27.8, the one of the second variable diminished from 8.4 to 6.4 and, finally, the one of the third variable eased from 21.5 to 20.1).
