The National Institute of Statistics disseminates data on the size of the resident population as well as on births, deaths and migratory movement.

The data are extrapolated from the registry office records of the 8,094 Italian municipalities as of 31 December 2010. The level of detail is regional and focuses on the large municipalities (those with over 250,000 inhabitants).

At the web address http://demo.istat.it data are available at a municipal level.

As of 31 December 2010 the total resident population of Italy was 60,626,442, with an increase of 286,114 (+0.5%) due exclusively to migration from abroad. Overall, the population variation was determined from the sum of the following items: the balance of natural population change (-25,544 units), the balance of foreign migration movement
(+380,085 units), an increase due to movement for other reasons and the internal balance equivalent to -68,427 units.

Households are approximately 25,193,000; the average number of members per household is 2.4 and is stable compared to 2009.

Time series are available at http://demo.istat.it/index_e.html
