Employment and unemployment (Provisional estimates) - January 2023

In January 2023 the number of employed and unemployed people increased, while a drop was recorded for inactive persons.

On a monthly basis, the rise of employment (+0.2%, +35 thousand) concerned women and people over the age of 35. Overall, the employment rate grew to 60.8% (+0.1 p.p.).

In the last month, the increase of unemployed persons (+1.7%, +33 thousand) involved women and people under the age of 50. The unemployment rate climbed to 7.9% (+0.1 p.p.), the youth rate to 22.9% (+0.7 p.p.).

In January the drop of inactive people aged 15-64 (-0.7%, -83 thousand) concerned both men and women and people over the age of 35. The inactivity rate declined to 33.9% (-0.2 p.p.).

In the period November 2022-January 2023, with respect to the previous quarter (August-October 2022), employment increased (+0.5%, +113 thousand).

In the last three months, a drop was registered for both unemployed persons (-1.0%, -20 thousand) and inactive people aged 15-64 years (-0.9%, -120 thousand).

Compared with January 2022, the number of employed persons increased by 2% (+459 thousand), the growth concerned both genders and all age groups; the employment rate showed an increase of 1.4 p.p. .

On a yearly basis, the rise of employed people was accompanied by a decrease of both unemployed persons (-6.7%, -143 thousand) and inactive people aged 15-64 (-3.7%, -478 thousand).
