Employment and unemployment (provisional) - September 2021

In September 2021 the number of employed increased, while a drop was recorded for both unemployed and inactive people.

On a monthly basis, the growth of employment (+0.3%, +59 thousand) involved more women than men, and concerned people aged 25-34 and over50. Overall, the employment rate rose to 58.3% (+0.2 p.p.).

In the last month, the decline of unemployed people (-1.2%, -28 thousand) concerned more men than women and only people aged over24. The unemployment rate drecreased to 9.2% (-0.1 p.p.) whereas the youth rate rose to 29.8% (+1.8 p.p.).

In September the decrease of inactive people aged 15-64 (-0.3%, -46 thousand) concerned only women and people aged 25-34 and over50. The inactivity rate dropped to 35.7% (-0.1 p.p.).

In the period July-September 2021, with respect to the previous quarter (April-June), the employment rose (+0.4%, +81 thousand) for both genders.

In the last three months, a drop was registered both for unemployed persons (-5.6%, -137 thousand) while inactive people aged 15-64 years were substantially stable.

Compared with September 2020, the number of employed persons increased by 1.2% (+273 thousand), the growth concerning both genders and all age classes with the exception of people aged 35-49 years; the employment rate showed an increase of 1.0 p.p. .

On a yearly basis, the rise of employed people was accompanied by a decrease of both unemployed persons (-9.1%, -230 thousand) and inactive people aged 15-64 (-2.0%, -280 thousand).
