Employment and unemployment (provisional)

In April 2021 the number of both employed and unemployed persons increased, while a decline was recorded for inactive people.

On a monthly basis, the growth of employment (+0.1%, +20 thousand) concerned women and under35, whereas a drop among men and over35 was registered. Overall, the employment rate went up to 56.9% (+0.1 p.p.).

In the last month, the growth of unemployed people (+3.4%, +88 thousand) involved both genders and all age classes. The unemployment rate rose to 10.7% (+0.3 p.p.) while the youth rate declined to 33.7% (-0.2 p.p.).

In April the decrease of inactive people aged 15-64 (-1.0%, -138 thousand) concerned more women (-1.3%, -111 thousand) than men (-0.5%, -27 thousand). The inactivity rate went down to 36.2% (-0.3 p.p.).

In the period February-April 2021, with respect to the previous quarter (November 2020-January 2021), employment dropped (-0.4%, -83 thousand) for both genders.

In the last three months, an increase was registered in the number of unemployed persons (+4.8%, +120 thousand) while inactive people aged 15-64 years decreased (-0.6%, -79 thousand).

Compared to April 2020, employment showed a fall both in terms of figures (-0.8%, -177 thousand) and rate (-0.1 percentage points).

On a yearly basis, the drop of employed people was accompanied by a sharp increase of unemployed persons (+48.3%, +870 thousand) and a marked decline of inactive people aged 15-64 (-6.3%, -932 thousand).
