Employment and unemployment (monthly)

In October 2019 the estimate of employed people increased (+0.2%, +46 thousand); the employment rate rose at 59.2% (+0.1 percentage points).

The increase of employment involved both men and women. A growth is observed among over 35 aged people (+49 thousand), while a slight decrease regarded people aged 25-34 and a stability is recorded for under 25.

The number of unemployed persons declined (-1.7%, -44 thousand in the last month); the decrease was the result of a remarkable drop among men and a light increase for women, and involved all age groups, with the exception of over 50 aged people. The unemployment rate dropped to 9.7% (-0.2 percentage points), the youth rate decreased to 27.8% (-0.7 percentage points).

Inactive people aged 15-64 increased (+0.2%, +25 thousand), as the result of a growth among men and a reduction among women. The inactivity rate rose to 34.3% (+0.1 percentage points).

In the period from August to October 2019, employment stayed stable in comparison with the previous quarter, although a slight increase is registered among women.

In the last three months, the stability of employment was accompanied by the drop of unemployed persons (-1.9%, -50 thousand) and the steadiness of inactive people aged 15-64 years.

Compared with October 2018, employment increased by 0.9% (+217 thousand). The growth concerned both men and women, and all age groups, with the exception of people aged 35-49.

On a yearly basis, the rise of employment was accompanied by a fall of unemployed persons (-9.7%, -269 thousand) and inactive people aged 15-64 (-0.4%, -49 thousand).
