The European Health Interview Survey (EHIS) was conducted in all the Member States of the European Union with the objective of comparing the various countries’ situations as regards the main aspects of the population’s health conditions and use of health services. The survey has been established by the Commission Regulation (EU) no. 255/2018 of 19 February 2018 (implementing Regulation (EC) no. 1338/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council on Community statistics on public health and health and safety at work, as regards statistics based on the European Health Interview Survey – EHIS). The survey is among those included in the National Statistics Programme, which collects the set of needed statistical surveys in Italy.

Each household was randomly selected from the municipal civil records list, following a sampling strategy aimed at yielding a sample statistically representative of the resident population. The survey was conducted for a sample of approximately 30,000 households, resident in 835 Italian municipalities very heterogeneous in terms of population size. The survey was performed during the period September – December 2019. The information was gathered by a yellow questionnaire administered to interview all the members of the household and a blue one, compiled personally by each member of the household aged 15 and over.
