Istat disseminates the time series on the material flows of the Italian socio-economic system for the years 1991-2007. For the first time, detailed information is provided, allowing disaggregated analyses on sustainable production and consumption, resource productivity, ecological footprint and socio-economic metabolism.
Total intake of used and unused natural resources both directly and indirectly connected to domestic activities is described at macro level in table 1 in the download area. Economy-wide indicators of material input, consumption and requirement are also shown in the same table. Table 2 shows the direct intake of natural resources from the national environment by type of material. Tables 3 and 4 describe the direct exchange of materials with the rest of the world by type of material.
All data are expressed in weight units (thousand tonnes). The accounts do not include air and water except for quantities included in the products.
Aggregates are calculated according to the satellite account’s methodology developed at European level. They are consistent with National Accounts monetary aggregates. Following the principle of residence and in addition to imports and exports, tables on exchanges with the rest of the world include, the uses of fuel by resident units abroad and by non-residents units in Italy.
