Istat publishes data on the structure and size of enterprise groups in Italy in 2012 under the classification of economic activities Nace Rev. 2, which came into force from 1st January 2008. The information is taken from the statistical business register on enterprise groups, built up in accordance with the provisions of European Regulation No. 177/2008 696/1993, according to the harmonized methodology adopted by Eurostat. The register integrates administrative sources and statistical sources.
Enterprise groups in Italy in 2012 were more than 90 thousand, including over 206 thousand Italian active enterprises, and they employed over 5.6 million persons. In comparison to 2011 the number of groups increased by 1.5 percent, the persons employed involved decreased by 0.9 per cent.
The groups regard about one-third of the persons employed of the active enterprises which are in the business register of active enterprises: Asia. The weight of the groups, in terms of persons employed, was 56.9 percent if calculated it in comparison only to the corporations.
Enterprise groups presented polarized characteristics, ranging from few structures of large size with remarkable economic weight and many groups of small and very small size.
