The social cost of road accidents is one of the most relevant indicators for assessing road safety performance. The updated values calculation, adopted during the 2021-2030 decade, considers the various factors contributing to determining the social costs: loss of productive capacity, human
costs, moral damage, biological damage, health costs, material damage, and administrative costs.
The parameters produced are distinguished as victims (within 30 days), injured, and, for the first time, seriously injured in road accidents. A strength of the method adopted is the use of data from a rich set of official sources, such as the Ministry of Health archives, the Italian National Institute for Insurance against Accidents at Work (INAIL) data, the National Association of Insurance Companies (ANIA) information, and other relevant demographic and economic statistics.
