In a world increasingly affected by the process of digitisation and datafication, it is natural thinking about the evolution of official statistics and its role in supporting decisions not only of institutions, but also of investors, journalists, citizens, scholars, or interested users for any reason.

This paper deals with the topic of Trusted Smart Statistics, highlighting their relationships with questions related to the personal data protection. Starting from the analysis of some elements of the context, it is underlined the potential of the analysis of new data sources and the risks for the rights and freedoms of the data subjects. It is the mentioned the European framework that is emerging in terms of data governance and the further challenges. Before concluding, some hypotheses are proposed for balancing needs of statistical production and
