National demographic balance
The National Institute of Statistics disseminates data on the size of the resident population as well as on births, deaths and migratory movement.
The data are extrapolated from the registry office records of the 8,100 Italian municipalities as of 31 December 2009. The level of detail is regional and focuses on the large municipalities (those with over 250,000 inhabitants).
At the web address http://demo.istat.it data are available at a municipal level.
As of 31 December 2009 the total resident population of Italy was 60,340,328, with an increase of 295,260 (+0.5%) due exclusively to migration from abroad.
Households are approximately 24,905,000; the average number of members per household is 2.4 and is stable compared to 2008.
According to the SDDS programme of the IMF, Istat publishes data of this press release on the National Summary Data Page and disseminates an annual calendar of press releases both on Istat and SDDS website.
