Production and costs in construction

The production in construction index provides monthly statistics on output in the sector, referring not only to all new work, but also to repair and maintenance data. The production in construction index is calculated on the base 2015=100.

The construction costs index measures changes in the costs of inputs to the construction process by monitoring separately the cost of each factor. This is a chain-linked index which uses December 2017 as a base for calculations and 2015 as a reference year.

In Quarter 1 (January to March) 2018, construction output was estimated to have decreased by 1.0%, following growth in both Quarter 3 and Quarter 4 of 2017. Construction output also dropped in the month-on-month series, decreasing by 1.2% in March 2018.

Compared with March 2017, construction output contracted by 4.7% after adjustment for calendar effect differences.

In March 2018, cost indices in construction for residential building remain unchanged m-o-m, while both road engineering work with tunnel section and road engineering work without tunnel section decreased by 0.2% m-o-m. Comparing with March 2017, all construction costs indices continued their rise in March 2018 (residential building +0.8%, road engineering with tunnel +0.8% and road engineering without tunnel +1.2%).
