Employment and unemployment (provisional estimates) - September 2025

In September 2025 the number of employed and unemployed people increased, while inactive people decreased.

On a monthly basis, employment grew (+0.3%, +67 thousand) for women and every age group except those aged 35-49, for whom it fell, while it remained substantially unchanged among men. Overall, the employment rate climbed at 62.7% (+0.2 p.p.).

In the last month, the increase in the number of unemployed people (+2.0%, +31 thousand) affected men and people aged 15-34 and 50+; unemployment decreased for women and those aged 35-49. The unemployment rate rose to 6.1% (+0.1 p.p.)., while the youth rate grew to 20.6% (+0.9 p.p.).

In September, the number of inactive people aged 15-64 decreased (-0.8%, -99 thousand) for both sexes and each age group, except for the 35-49 age group, for whom it increased. The inactivity rate fell to 33.1% (-0.3 p.p.).

In the quarter July-September 2025, with respect to the previous one (April-June 2025), employment increased (+0.1%, +31 thousand).

On a quarterly basis, a drop was registered in the number of unemployed persons (-4.5%, -73 thousand) while the number of inactive people aged 15-64 increased (+0.3%, +36 thousand).

Compared with September 2024, the number of employed persons increased by 0.7% (+176 thousand); the growth affected both sexes and those aged 50+, while employment decreased in all other age groups. Over the year, the employment rate showed a rise of 0.3 p.p. .

On a yearly basis, the increase of employed people was accompanied by an increase of unemployed persons (+1.0%, +16 thousand) while the number of inactive persons aged 15-64 decreased (-1.3%, -167 thousand).
