Employment and unemployment (provisional estimates) - October 2025
In October 2025 the number of employed people increased, while inactive and unemployed people decreased.
On a monthly basis, employment grew (+0.3%, +75 thousand) for both genders and every age group except those aged 25-34, for whom it fell. Overall, the employment rate climbed at 62.7% (+0.1 p.p.).
In the last month, the drop in the number of unemployed people (-3.7%, -59 thousand) affected men, women and all age groups. The unemployment rate fell to 6.0% (-0.2 p.p.), the youth rate to 19.8% (-1.9 p.p.).
In October, the number of inactive people aged 15-64 remained substantially unchanged, even when broken down by sex, while it increased among 15-34 year-olds and decreased among those over 34. The inactivity rate was steady at 33.2% .
In the quarter August-October 2025, with respect to the previous one (May-July 2025), employment was substantially unchanged.
On a quarterly basis, a drop was registered in the number of unemployed persons (-4.4%, -71 thousand) while the number of inactive people aged 15-64 increased (+0.5%, +61 thousand).
Compared with October 2024, the number of employed persons increased by 0.9% (+224 thousand); the growth affected both sexes and those aged 50+, while employment decreased in all other age groups. Over the year, the employment rate showed a rise of 0.4 p.p. .
On a yearly basis, the increase in the number of employed people was accompanied by a decrease in the number of both unemployed people (-2.2%, -34 thousand) and inactive people aged 15-64 (-1.4%, -171 thousand).
