Employment and unemployment (monthly)

In order to improve the timeliness of statistical information on the Italian labour market and in accordance with the agreements made within the European Union, Istat publishes monthly estimates of the main labour market indicators resulting from the “Labour force survey”.

In May 2018, 23.382 million persons were employed, +0.5% over April. Unemployed were 2.793 million, -2.9% over the previous month.

Employment rate was 58.8%, +0.2 percentage points over the previous month, unemployment rate was 10.7%, -0.3 percentage points over April 2018 and inactivity rate was 34.0%, steady over the previous month.

Youth unemployment rate (aged 15-24) was 31.9%, -1.0 percentage points over the previous month and youth unemployment ratio in the same age group was 8.3%, -0.4 percentage points over April 2018.
