Employment and unemployment (provisional estimates) - January 2025
In January 2025 the number of employed people grew, while unemployed and inactive people decreased.
On a monthly basis, employment grew among men, women and all age groups, except among those aged 35-49 where it decreased. Overall, the employment rate rose to 62.8% (+0.4 p.p.).
In the last month, the decline in the number of unemployed persons (-0.6%, -9 thousand) is observed among men and across all age groups, except for those aged 25-34, where it rose; the number of unemployed women remained stable. The unemployment rate fell to 6.3% (-0.1 p.p.), as well as the youth rate, down to 18.7% (-0.3 p.p.).
In January, the number of inactive people decreased (-1.2%, -146 thousand) for men, women, those aged 15-34 and 50 and over , while it increased for people aged 35-49. The inactivity rate fell to 32.9% (-0.4 p.p.).
In the quarter November 2024-January 2025, with respect to the previous one (August-October 2024), employment increased (+0.4%, +85 thousand).
On a quarterly basis, a growth was registered in the number of unemployed persons (+1.4%, +22 thousand) while the number of inactive people aged 15-64 years decreased (-0.8%, -99 thousand).
Compared with January 2024, the number of employed persons increased by 2.2% (+513 thousand); the growth affected both sexes and those aged 25-34 and 50 and over, while employment decreased for the other age groups. Over the year, the employment rate showed an increase of 1.0 p.p. .
On a yearly basis, the rise of employed people was accompanied by a decrease of unemployed persons (-10.7%, -194 thousand) and of the inactive people aged 15-64 (-1.3%, -158 thousand).
