Employment and unemployment (provisional estimates)

In order to improve the timeliness of statistical information on the Italian labour market and in accordance with the agreements made within the European Union, Istat publishes monthly estimates of the main labour market indicators resulting from the “Labour force survey”.

In January 2014 22.259 million persons were employed, unchanged compared with December 2013. Unemployed were 3.293 million, +1.9% with respect to the previous month

Employment rate was 55.3%, -0.1 percentage points with respect to December 2013, unemployment rate was 12.9%, +0.2 percentage points compared with the previous month, and inactivity rate was 36.4%, -0.1 percentage points in a month.

Youth unemployment rate (aged 15-24) was 42.4%, +0.7 percentage points compared with the previous month, youth unemployment ratio in the same age group was 11.5%, +0.3 percentage points in a month.
