Consumer prices - April 2026
Final data
In April 2026 the Italian consumer price index for the whole nation (NIC) was +1.1% compared with the previous month and +2.7% on annual basis (up from +1.7%); the flash estimate was +2.8%.
The acceleration of inflation was mainly due to the dynamics of prices of Non-regulated energy products (from -2.0% to +9.6%), of Regulated energy products (from -1.6% to +5.3%) and of Unprocessed food (from +4.7% to +5.9%). On the contrary, the prices of Services related to recreation, including repair and personal care (from +3.0% to +2.6%) and of Services related to transport (from +2.2% to +0.6%) slowed down.
Core inflation (excluding energy and unprocessed food) was +1.6% (from +1.9%) and inflation excluding energy was +1.9% (from +2.1%).
As for Goods, the year on year growth rate was +3.1% (up from +0.8%) and for Services the annual rate of change was +2.4% (down from +2.8%). As a consequence, the inflationary gap between Services and Goods decreases (-0.7 percentage points from +2.0 p.p. om the previous month).
The month-on-month increase in the overall index was mainly due to the prices of Non-regulated energy products (+5.4%), of Unprocessed food (+2.0%), of Services related to transport (+1.7%) and of Services related to recreation, including repair and personal care (+1.4%); on the contrary, prices of Regulated energy products (-0.3%) decreased.
In April 2026 the Italian harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP) recorded a month-on-month change of +1.6%, mainly due to the end of the winter sales of Clothing and footwear (not considered by NIC), and a year-on-year increase of +2.8% (from +1.6% in the previous month); the flash estimate was +2.9%.
