Business structure and performance of foreign affiliates resident in Italy Archive

In 2011, there were 13,527 foreign affiliates resident in Italy. They employed 1.2 million persons, generated a turnover of 493 billion euros and a value added of 96,6 billion euros.
The foreign affiliates decreased their presence in Italy compared to 2010-1,6%, but increased the number of persons employed by +1,1, as well as turnover: +5,3 and value added: +3,3.
The economic relevance of these enterprises, as compared to resident businesses, was equal to 7,1% of persons employed, 16,4% of turnover and 13,4% value added. The share of R&D expenditure is quite remarkable: 24,2%.
Foreign affiliates have an average size of 88.6 employees and achieve a better performance than the domestically controlled firms in terms of profitability and productivity.
Labour cost of foreign affiliates is higher than the domestically controlled (46 thousand euros compared to 32 thousands.
