Synthetic classification of crimes
The Italian classification of crimes known as the synthetic classification, used by Istat, groups the elements of the catalog of offenses that constitute crimes according to the “legal interest” deserving protection under criminal law, which is violated.
To grouping them, an intermediate code is used (codicefin). To each article of the penal code present in the catalogue, as well as to the complementary norms included therein, one of these codes is assigned, which facilitates aggregation into classification categories.
The entries of the synthetic classification are based on the titles and sections of the penal code for groupings at multiple hierarchical levels, even if not all are complete, with the specification of some more important detailed entries. Crime entries that are not part of the penal code are represented by “topic”.
The synthetic classification, together with the analytical or detailed classification of crimes, forms the basis of Crime Statistics. This is the traditional name given to the statistics of criminal proceedings registered in the Public Prosecutor’s Offices for which criminal prosecution is pursued.
Data dissemination occurs not only through periodic publications but also through the database.
