Classification of crimes
The relevance and complexity of the crime statistics published by Istat, which concern acts constituting violations of criminal law and the persons responsible for such violations, make it necessary to develop a classification system that is continuously updated and shared with all bodies involved in data dissemination.
The list of legal provisions on which the classification is based includes all forms of criminal offences, both felonies and misdemeanours.
The list of criminal provisions and the classification are designed to accommodate future developments in legislation. To this end, a continuous process for updating the offence classification has been defined, involving multiple stakeholders.
The aim of the project is to make statistical distributions based on this classification immediately comparable, as well as to ensure the widest possible sharing of the system among institutions and other interested parties.
Updates to the legal catalogue and classifications are not continuous but periodic. At present, the catalogue is updated to legislation in force as of December 2024.
