Household consumptions

In 2010 the average monthly household consumption expenditure, in current values, was 2,453 Euros, with a +0.5% change in comparison with 2009. Taking into account the sampling error (0.6%) and the dynamics of the imputed rent (+0.2%), the variation corresponds to a stability in real terms, despite the inflation rate (+1.5%).

The median monthly expenditure was 2,040 Euros (+1.0% in comparison with the previous year) and it confirmed the stability observed in average terms.

In comparison with 2009, the average expenditure on food and beverages was stable (+1.2%) and equal to 467 Euros per month: the meat expenditure increased while the oil and fats expenditure decreased.

The share of total consumption expenditure on food and beverages was the same as in 2009 for the North (16.5%) and the Centre (18.6%), while it increased in the South and the Islands, where it represented a quarter of the total expenditure.

Similarly to food and beverages, also the average non food expenditure was stable and equal to 1,987 Euros per month.
A reduction was observed for expenditures on electricity, gas and other fuels and for other goods and services.
The share of total consumption expenditure devoted to housing increased, as well as the share used for health and education.
Lombardia was the region showing the highest expenditure level (2,896 Euros), followed by Emilia-Romagna (2,885) and Veneto (2,876). At the bottom of the ranking, once again, Sicilia with an average monthly expenditure (1,668) of about 1,000 Euros less than that observed in the regions showing the highest levels.
