Employment and unemployment (provisional estimates) - April 2023

In April 2023 the number of employed people grew, while both unemployed and inactive persons decreased.

On a monthly basis, the increase of employment (+0.2%, +48 thousand) concerned women, youngest people and those aged 50 and over, while a decline was registered for men and middle age groups. Overall, the employment rate rose to 61.0%.

In the last month, the decline of unemployed persons (-0.7%, -14 thousand) involved women and people in the 15-24 and 35-49 age groups. The unemployment rate declined to 7.8% (-0.1 p.p.), the youth rate to 20.4% (-1.4 p.p.).

In April the drop in the number of inactive people aged 15 to 64 was the result of a growth among men and people aged 15-49 years and of a decrease among women and people aged 50 and over. The inactivity rate fell to 33.6% (-0.1 p.p.).

In the period February-April 2023, with respect to the previous quarter (November 2022-January 2023), employment increased (+0.5%, +123 thousand).

In the last three months, a rise was registered for unemployed persons (+0.2%, +4 thousand) while inactive people aged 15-64 years dropped (-0.9%, -117 thousand).

Compared with April 2022, the number of employed persons rose by 1.7% (+390 thousand), the growth concerned both genders and all age groups except 35-49 years; the employment rate showed an increase of 1.0 p.p. .

On a yearly basis, the rise of employed people was accompanied by a decrease of both unemployed persons (-3.5%, -72 thousand) and inactive people aged 15-64 (-3.0%, -383 thousand).
