Employment and unemployment (Provisional estimates) - October 2021

In October 2021 the number of both employed and unemployed increased, while a drop was recorded for inactive people.

On a monthly basis, the growth of employment (+0.2%, +35 thousand) involved only men, people aged 15-24 and over50. Overall, the employment rate rose to 58.6% (+0.1 p.p.).

In the last month, the increase of unemployed people (+2.2%, +51 thousand) concerned both men and women, and only people aged over24. The unemployment rate rose to 9.4% (+0.2 p.p.) whereas the youth rate fell to 28.2% (-1.4 p.p.).

In October the decrease of inactive people aged 15-64 (-0.6%, -79 thousand) was widespread both by sex and by age group. The inactivity rate dropped to 35.2% (-0.2 p.p.).

In the period August-October 2021, with respect to the previous quarter (May-July), the employment rose (+0.2%, +42 thousand) for both genders.

In the last three months, a drop was registered both for unemployed persons (-2.1%, -49 thousand) and inactive people aged 15-64 years (-0.2%, -33 thousand).

Compared with October 2020, the number of employed persons increased by 1.7% (+390 thousand), the growth concerning both genders and all age classes with the exception of people aged 35-49 years; the employment rate showed an increase of 1.2 p.p. .

On a yearly basis, the rise of employed people was accompanied by a decrease of both unemployed persons (-5.6%, -139 thousand) and inactive people aged 15-64 (-3.1%, -425 thousand).
