The retail trade index measures the monthly evolution of the turnover at current prices of businesses which are engaged in retail trade. With effect from January 2018, the indices are calculated with reference to the base year 2015, using the Ateco 2007 classification (Italian edition of Nace Rev. 2).
In February 2018 estimates of retail trade index decreased by 0.6% compared with February 2017 and increased by 0.4% compared with January 2018.
Looking at the volume of retail trade, there was no growth compared with the same period last year, while there was a rise of 0.9% on the month.
The underlying pattern in the retail sector continues to show a fall with the 3 months on 3-month movement dropping by 0.7% in terms of value and volume.
In February 2018 the value of online sales slightly fell year-on-year by 0.1%. In the same period, while the index for large-scale distribution remained stable (0.0%), small-scale distribution rate showed a decline (-1.7%).
