In 2013 there were about 276,000 business births, approximately 1,100 companies more than the previous year. The birth rate is 7.1%, a low increase over the previous year (7.0%). In 2013, more than 333,000 enterprises have ceased their activities.

For the sixth consecutive year the turnover net rate has a negative value, -1.5% (-1.1% in 2012). In detail, the Construction sector has the highest negative value (-3.9%).

Compared to 2012, an increase in the birth rate affects only the Trade sector (+ 0.5%). The birth rate is stable in Construction and in the Other Services sectors, while it decreases in Manufacturing (-0.2%).

Centre, South and the Islands are the areas with the highest birth rates (7.7% and 8.5% respectively), while North-west and North-east birth rates are below the national average. Unlike the last two years, in 2013 the birth rate of enterprises with employees grows, while the birth rate of those without employees decreases.

The overall business death rate is higher than the previous twelve months (from 8.1 to 8.5%).

The death rate is growing in all sectors, especially in Construction (from 10.8 to 11.4%), in Trade (from 8.3 to 8.7%) and in Other services (7.5 to 7.9%).

In 2013, the percentage of businesses survival after one year decreases. In fact 76.1% of businesses born in the previous year are still working, while in 2012 the survival rate was 81.1%

In the sector of Other Services the highest decline in the survival rate at one year is registered (from 80.8% to 73.9%), followed by  Construction (from 79.0% to 74.1%), Manufacturing (from 86.9% to 84.5%) and Trade (from 81.1% to 78.7%).

The average size of enterprises established in 2010 and still active after three years increased between 2010 and 2013, from 1.4 to 2.4 average employees.

These enterprises employ about 382,000 people, compared to 374,000 observed  in the year of birth; the increase in employment is therefore equal to 2%.

All macro-economic activities show a gain in employment compared to the year of birth, except the Construction sector (-17.2%).

The highest increase is recorded in Manufacturing (+ 35%).
