Employment and unemployment (provisional estimates) – November 2024
In November 2024 the number of both employed and unemployed persons decreased, while inactive people rose.
On a monthly basis, employment fell (-0.1%, -13 thousand) for men and those aged 15-34, while it increased for women and those aged 35 and over. Overall, the employment rate remained unchanged at 62.4%.
In the last month, the decline in the number of unemployed persons (-1.6%, -24 thousand) affected women and those aged 25-49, while unemployment rose for other age groups and only slightly for men. The unemployment rate fell to 5.7% (-0.1 p.p.), while the youth rate climbed to 19.2% (+1.4 p.p.).
In November, the number of inactive people aged 15 to 64 increased (+0.2%, +23 thousand) for men and those under 35, while it decreased for other age groups and was substantially stable for women. The inactivity rate rose to 33.7% (+0.1 p.p.).
In the period September-November 2024, with respect to the previous quarter (June-August 2024), employment increased (+0.2, +49 thousand).
On a quarterly basis, a drop was registered in the number of unemployed persons (-8.4%, -136 thousand) while the number of inactive people aged 15-64 years grew (+0.9%, +115 thousand).
Compared with November 2023, the number of employed persons increased by 1.4% (+328 thousand); the growth affected both sexes and those aged 35 and over, while employment decreased for those aged 15-34. Over the year, the employment rate showed an increase of 0.5 p.p. .
On a yearly basis, the rise of employed people was accompanied by a decrease of unemployed persons (-23.9%, -459 thousand) while the number of inactive persons aged 15-64 increased (+2.6%, +323 thousand).
