Analytical classification of crimes

The so-called analytical classification of criminal offences is a version of the offence classification used by Istat that groups the elements of the Catalogue of Criminal Offences (or offence thesaurus) by means of an internal intermediate code (codicefin).

Unlike the synthetic classification, the offence categories are not based on the titles and sections of the Criminal Code. Instead, the classification provides a broad and detailed breakdown of the subject matters of both the Criminal Codes and supplementary legislation, represented through sets of elements drawn from the thesaurus.

This classification, together with the synthetic classification, forms the basis for the presentation of data in Crime Statistics, which is the traditional designation for statistics on criminal proceedings recorded by the Public Prosecutors’ Offices for which criminal prosecution is pursued.

Data dissemination occurs not only through periodic publications but also through the database.
