Employment and unemployment (monthly)

In order to improve the timeliness of statistical information on the Italian labour market and in accordance with the agreements made within the European Union, Istat publishes monthly estimates of the main labour market indicators resulting from the “Labour force survey”.

In January 2017, 22.856 million persons were employed, +0.1% over December 2016. Unemployed were 3.097 million, +0.1% over the previous month.

Employment rate was 57.5%, +0.1 percentage points over December 2016, unemployment rate was 11.9%, unchanged over the previous month, and inactivity rate was 34.6%, -0.1 percentage points in a month.

Youth unemployment rate (aged 15-24) was 37.9%, -1.3 percentage points over December 2016 and youth unemployment ratio in the same age group was 10.1%, -0.6 percentage points in a month.
