Environmental subsidies and other environmental transfers
On the 28th of July 2026 Istat releases for the first time data on environmental subsidies and similar transfers (2016-2023) on the data warehouse IstatData ‘National accounts’ theme, ‘Environmental accounts\Account of environmental subsidies and similar transfers’ sub-theme.
The environmental subsidies and similar transfers (Esst) account measures current and capital transfers provided by General Government and non-resident units (Rest of the World) intended to support activities that protect the environment or reduce the use and extraction of natural resources, carried out by corporations, households, general government, Non-profit institutions serving households (NPISHs) and units of the Rest of the World. Environmental transfers are classified according to the following groups (or their groupings) of the Classification of Environmental Purposes (CEP), adopted by the United Nations Statistical Commission in 2024: Air and climate, Renewable energy, Energy management and saving, Wastewater management, Water saving and management of natural water resources, Waste management, Materials recovery and saving, Protection of soil, surface water and groundwater, Biodiversity and landscape protection, Forest resource management, Noise and radiation, R&D for environmental protection, R&D for resource management, and Cross-cutting and other environmental protection activities.
Data derived from the account, calculated on the basis of European standards for monetary environmental accounts, are consistent with national accounts concepts and principles (ESA 2010) and can be directly compared with macroeconomic aggregates, namely GDP, subsidies, other current transfers and capital transfers.
The main data sources are national accounts – primarily General Government expenditure by function accounts.
