Production of environmental goods and services – time series updated

On the 24th of February 2026 Istat releases data on the supply of environmental goods and services as well as on expenditure for environmental protection (2016-2023) on data warehouse Istat.data – ‘National accounts’ theme, ‘Environmental accounts’ sub-theme.

The time series released incorporate innovations and revisions of data sources and of the European requirements (Regulation EU 1131/2025), introducing the new Classification of Environmental Purposes (CEP), adopted by the Statistical Commission of the United Nations in 2024.

The two monetary environmental accounts supply information on the activities and actions carried out each year by the socio-economic system in order to mitigate the pressure of economic activities on the environment.

The environmental goods and services sector account, also known as ecoindustries’ account, measures output, value added, exports and employment related to the supply of goods and services that fulfill (or whose use fulfills) the purpose of environmental protection from pollution and any other environmental degradation or preservation, maintenance and enhancement of natural resources. Starting from this release, the account reports also estimates on investments for climate change mitigation related to the activities covered by the classification of environmental purposes (CEP).

The environmental protection expenditure account measures how much households, corporations and general government spend to purchase environmental protection (EP) services, the investments carried out by producers of EP services for the market and the whole amount of expenditure carried out for own account EP activities. Included are net transfers for environmental protection to the rest of the world.

Data derived from both accounts are elaborated according to the European standards for monetary environmental accounts, which are consistent with national accounts concepts and principles (ESA 2010). Therefore the estimates can be directly compared with macroeconomic aggregates, namely GDP, output, households consumption, gross fixed capital formation, exports, employment.
