Resident population and population change
The National Institute of Statistics disseminates data on the size of the resident population as well as on births, deaths and migratory movement. The data are extrapolated from the registry office records of the 8,092 Italian municipalities as of 31 December 2012. The level of detail is regional and focuses on the large municipalities (those with over 250,000 inhabitants).
At the web address http://demo.istat.it data are available at a municipal level.
As of 31 December 2012 the total resident population of Italy was 59,685,227, with an increase of 290,020 (+0.5%) due exclusively to migration from abroad and to statistical adjustments after the 2011 Census of population. Overall, the population variation was determined from the sum of the following items: the balance of natural population change (-78,697 units), the balance of foreign migration movement (+244,556 units), an increase due to a statistical adjustment after the Population Census al 2011 (+165,715) and a movement for other reasons and the internal balance equivalent to -39,977 units.
Households are approximately 25,873,000; the average number of members per household is 2.3 and is in stable compared to 2011.
