Retail trade

The retail trade index measures the monthly evolution of the turnover at current prices of enterprises with retail sale outlets. With effect from January 2013 the indices are calculated with reference to the base year 2010 using the Ateco 2007 classification (Italian edition of Nace Rev. 2).

The value of retail trade increased by 1.0% in May 2017 compared with May 2016 (+1.1% for food goods and +0.9% for non-food goods) and decreased by -0.1% compared with April 2017 (-0.8% for food goods and +0.3% for non-food goods).

Abstracting from the short-term variability, the underlying pattern, as measured by the 3 month on 3 month change showed no growth in May 2017.

Year-on-year estimates of the volume in the retail industry increased by 0.2% compared with April 2017, while the seasonally adjusted volume index decreased by 0.3% when compared to the previous month. Falls were reported for food goods, while non-food goods showed growth,
both for seasonally adjusted and seasonally unadjusted volume index.

Total value of sales for large scale distribution through May 2017 were up to 1.1% from the same period a year earlier, while the index for small scale distribution was up to 0.8%.
